Word Families Kit 1

We have seven Phonics Kits that will help your beginning reader to feel more successful as they learn to read.

Find them along the side wall between the windows in the Children’s Area. The Kits checkout for three weeks and are renewable once if no holds are pending. The four additional Kits (Sight Words, Blends and Digraphs, Long Vowel e Words, and Talking Flash Cards) were the result of a Rotary Club of Cary-Grove grant.

Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read-Level 3 & Learn to Read-Level 4

Best for emergent readers, Kindergarten level, and designed for children that already have phonemic awareness and know the sounds of letters. This Kit contains video lessons, storybooks, and workbooks (Level 3), and more advanced video lessons, storybooks, and workbooks for Kindergarten (Level 4). Check this Kit’s availability in the catalog.

Word Families 1

Uses rhyming CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant, like “cat-fat-hat”). This Kit contains beginning level books, wooden reading blocks, CVC pop boards, CVC objects, and flashcards.  Check this Kit’s availability in the catalog.

Word Families 2

Uses rhyming CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant, like “cat-fat-hat”) but with a more advanced vocabulary than the Word Families 1 Kit. This Kit contains books, rhyming puzzles, a phonics card game, and flashcards. Check this Kit’s availability in the catalog.

Sight Words

Sight words are commonly used words that readers can recognize instantly, without having to sound out each letter or decode them. This Kit has 4 fun games and flashcards that will help your child in their reading journey. Choose the level your child needs, as the Kit includes sight words from preschool to third grade.

Blends and Digraphs

This kit contains first-grade level and up card games, matching games, dominoes, and books designed to reinforce beginning and ending consonant blends and digraphs. Consonant blends are two or three consonants that appear next to each other in a word, blending their sounds to create a new sound (like “br,” “cl,” “sk,” and “spl”). A consonant digraph is two consonants that are placed next to each other to create a single consonant sound (like “ch,” “sh,” “the,” and “wh”).

Long Vowel e Words

Long vowel CVCe words are words that have a consonant, vowel, consonant, and a silent “e” at the end. The vowel in the middle of the word makes a long vowel sound, while the “e” is silent. Some examples of CVCe words include: “note,” “tape,” “fine,” “cake,” and “cute.” This Kit contains first-grade and up decodable cards, puzzles, dominoes, books, and a flip board.

Talking Flash Cards

This Kit is a handheld game for ages 3 and up that helps children learn vocabulary. Kids will place flashcards into the game and hear the word spoken. 19 different topics, like clothing, sports, foods, and nature, can enhance your child’s pronunciation and help them learn the meaning of these words.
