1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten logo.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a year-round program for parents and caregivers to equip their child(ren) for school by reading 1000 books before they enter Kindergarten. Not only does reading with your child provide a great bonding experience and help them with their social and emotional learning, but it is also the best thing you can do to set them up for academic success.

How does the program work?

  • Sign up at the Service Center, at which point you’ll receive your first log and a small canvas bag for your checkouts.
  • You’ll track 100 books at a time on our “caterpillar” logs by coloring in shapes. We’ll also keep track of your progress on our special display in the Children’s Area that features your child’s name on a cut-out caterpillar. Turn in your completed log to receive the next log.
  • Your child will earn a sticker for each completed log and be able to move their display caterpillar to the next “book” step. You will be provided with early literacy tips on each log to help you maximize this important time with your child.
  • When you’ve completed the program, turn in your last log and collect your completion goodie– a children’s book for your personal library! We will also add your child’s name to a butterfly cut-out for our display that indicates they have completed the program.
